Museum Victoria is a multidisciplinary museum in Melbourne, Australia with three public venues – Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and the Immigration Museum. The museum’s collection dates back to 1854 and comprises natural sciences (including zoological, palaeontological, and geological specimens) and humanities (including indigenous cultures, history and technology collections). The museum cares for an estimated 17 million items, many of which are grouped together as a single entry in the electronic cataloguing system.
The MV Collections website provides access to over 1.15 million records, representing items in the Humanities collection; specimens in the Sciences collection; articles written about significant people, places and parts of the collection; and species profiles written about animals that can be observed in the wild. A search may deliver results across items, species, specimens or article records. Results can be refined by adding a new search term to the existing query, or by using the supplied filters. The million plus records are illustrated by over 170,000 images, videos and sounds. We wish to encourage reuse and sharing of content. To that end, all the information written by curators, collection managers, and others is released under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. The elements of each record that are defined as ‘data’ carry a CC0 license. Images carry open licenses wherever possible or are marked as Public Domain as applicable. |

The assets include both community and operating

Community assets
These assets are the State’s archival collection. The
collection was re-valued in 2012 - 2013 at $258.3m.
Building assets
Records repositories for storage of the State
Archives and the State Government’s non-current
records are located at North Melbourne and
Ballarat. The Victorian Archives Centre in North
Melbourne, including land, was valued in 2012
-2013 and is now valued at $59.9m.
Motor vehicles
Public Record Office Victoria operates two vehicles:
a sedan and a station wagon.
Plant and operating equipment
Operating assets are used for the upkeep of the
physical and digital repositories so public records
can be stored safely and made available for public
inspection.

Each year, up to 15,000 visitors attend the PROV reading room(s) to view original Victorian State Government historical records held within our collection.
As 99% of our collection is in original hard copy format, a researcher must either order a record and request a remote photocopy or digital copy order or attend the reading room to view and make their own copies of the original record.
PROV does not provide a research service for researchers who are unable to attend the reading room. A researcher must either engage a search agent or ask a friend or family member to attend on their behalf to view the original record. |

Public Record Office Victoria operates two public
reading rooms; one at the Victorian Archives Centre
in North Melbourne and the other at the Ballarat
Archives Centre in Ballarat. Records can also be
accessed at the Bendigo Regional Archives Centre
and Geelong Heritage Centre Reading Rooms, both
of which are Places of Deposit.
During 2014–2015, 15,542 visitors utilised the
Reading Rooms to view records. 48,949 records
were issued to visitors and another 11,942 were
issued to Government Agencies and for internal
Public Record Office Victoria use.
Our Reading Room staff delivered a number of
information sessions to the public on how to
use the Public Record Office Victoria collection
and sessions focusing on specific areas of the
collection.
In 2014–2015 our online enquiry system was
launched to manage incoming reference queries.
Over a twelve-month period, the system dealt
with on average 759 queries per month; providing
a more consistent and seamless approach to
customer service. |

Public Record Office Victoria has an ongoing focus on energy efficiency and the reduction of waste, water and paper use. Broadly our aims are to:
• Maintain a reduced carbon footprint at the VAC.
• Maintain a reduced ecological footprint around our office based activities.
• Continue to support the sustainable management and use of government records.
During the year we progressed several major facility projects that delivered immediate energy efficiencies to the Victorian Archives Centre:
• We installed our fourth new chiller unit as part of our multi-year chiller replacement program. These new chiller units are extremely energy efficient.
• We upgraded our entire external lighting system to use energy efficient LED lights.
• We installed a new second boiler. We have three boilers in total, with the final unit scheduled to be replaced during 2016-17. These boilers use gas and we have already seen a reduction in gas consumption with the introduction of the first two new boilers.
We will investigate the possibility of installing solar panels in 2016-17 as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and further increasing our energy efficiency at the Victorian Archives Centre.

The PROV semantic wiki is a place for users to explore, share and contribute their knowledge of Victoria's history. It is built on the Semantic Mediawiki platform that turns a standard wiki into a queriable database full of structured data using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) data model synonymous with the semantic web.
In essence all content on the wiki can be tagged or annotated so that it becomes both human and machine readable. The content reflects the diversity of Victoria's history since European Settlement explored by staff and public researchers.
This dataset trepresents the most current snapshot of the prov wiki page metadata expressed in RDF. It contains 119180 triples or individual pieces of metadata representing approximately 5,000 wiki pages compared to the previous 2012 snapshot containing 9092 triples or individual pieces of metadata representing approximately 300 wiki pages.
